G1D · General question group

VE/VEC, Element Credit & Remote Operation

Licensing is built around examination elements, volunteer examiners, and FCC licensing records. Remote control changes where the control point is, not who is responsible for the station.

Practical takeaway

Licensing is built around examination elements, volunteer examiners, and FCC licensing records. Remote control changes where the control point is, not who is responsible for the station.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G1D while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. VEs administer; VECs coordinate

Volunteer Examiners conduct amateur examinations, while Volunteer Examiner Coordinators organize and coordinate examination activity and interface with the licensing system. The roles are related but not interchangeable.

2. Element credit and a license grant are different things

Passing an examination element establishes exam credit under the rules. Operating authority comes from the actual FCC license grant and the privileges shown in the licensing record.

3. Remote control still has a control operator

A remotely controlled station may be operated from far away, but the control operator remains responsible for proper operation. The Internet link or station owner does not take that responsibility away.

G1D checklist

  • Know the difference between a Volunteer Examiner and a Volunteer Examiner Coordinator.
  • Element credit and an FCC license grant are related but distinct.
  • A remotely controlled station still has a control operator and control point.
  • Operating authority comes from the current FCC license grant.
