Power, Data & 60 Meters

Power limits are ceilings, not targets. A clean signal at the minimum power needed is usually better Amateur Radio than simply turning the amplifier up.

Practical takeaway

Power limits are ceilings, not targets. A clean signal at the minimum power needed is usually better Amateur Radio than simply turning the amplifier up.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G1C while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. Use only the power you need

Part 97 requires using the minimum transmitter power necessary to carry out the desired communication, subject to the maximum allowed for the band and situation. Several bands and special allocations impose lower limits than the familiar general maximum.

2. Data signals are constrained by more than frequency

Digital operation can be limited by occupied bandwidth, symbol rate, emission type, or band segment. The rule applies to the actual signal being transmitted, not simply to the label “digital.”

3. 60 meters is deliberately different

The 60-meter amateur allocation is shared and channelized, so channel center, allowed signal type, power, and bandwidth have to be treated as one operating rule set.

G1C checklist

  • Use the minimum power needed for reliable communication.
  • Maximum legal power depends on band and operating situation.
  • Digital emissions can be limited by bandwidth, symbol rate, or emission type.
  • Remember that 60 meters is channelized and has special rules.
