Transmission Lines & Microstrip

At RF, a transmission line carries traveling electromagnetic waves. Characteristic impedance, propagation velocity, loss, and termination determine what the source sees.

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind E9F while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. A matched line carries power without reflection

When the load equals the line’s characteristic impedance, the forward wave is absorbed by the load. A mismatch creates a reflected wave whose magnitude and phase depend on the load impedance.

2. Electrical length changes impedance along a mismatched line

The impedance looking into a mismatched line repeats every half wavelength and transforms continuously along the line. Quarter-wave sections can exchange high and low impedances in useful ways.

3. Microstrip is a planar transmission line

A conductor trace over a ground plane with dielectric between them forms microstrip. Trace width, dielectric thickness/permittivity, copper thickness, and nearby structures determine characteristic impedance and loss.

E9F checklist

  • Matched load equals characteristic impedance in the ideal case.
  • Mismatch creates a reflection coefficient and standing waves.
  • Input impedance varies with electrical line length when the load is mismatched.
  • Microstrip impedance depends on geometry and dielectric properties.
