Amateur Extra learning path · Element 4

Study by Section

Use this area to actually learn the material behind each Amateur Extra subelement. Start with a section, work through its question-group lessons, then use Quiz Me to check yourself or revisit a weak area you found on a practice exam.

Amateur Extra curriculum

Choose a section to study

Each section opens into focused teaching pages with explanations, practical Amateur Radio context, a review checklist, and a direct quiz for that exact question group.

E1

Commission Rules

Extra-class rule questions often live at the edges of ordinary operating. Build the habit of asking what kind of station/control situation you are in before choosing the rule.

E2

Operating Procedures

This section is where “advanced” starts to mean using radio in more specialized ways, not merely owning more complicated equipment.

E3

Radio-Wave Propagation

Extra propagation is less about naming layers and more about explaining why a strange path works—and what operating choice takes advantage of it.

E4

Amateur Practices

A good measurement is not “a number appeared.” It is a number you understand well enough to know its uncertainty and whether the setup changed the thing being measured.

E5

Electrical Principles

This material is the mathematical language behind filters, matching networks, feed lines, oscillators, and many of the measurements in E4.

E6

Circuit Components

At Extra level the question is often not just “what is this part?” but “why is this particular device a good choice at this frequency or in this circuit?”

E7

Practical Circuits

This is the “open the lid and explain the blocks” section. The goal is to predict behavior, not merely recognize a schematic symbol.

E8

Signals & Emissions

E8 is where the oscilloscope view, spectrum-analyzer view, and information being carried all become different views of the same signal.

E9

Antennas & Transmission Lines

Extra antenna work ties together geometry, complex impedance, feed-line behavior, and the practical question: where does the RF actually go?

E0

Safety

The Extra exam gives safety fewer questions than antennas or circuits; real life does not. One mistake around RF power, high voltage, lightning, or a tower can dominate everything else.
