Oscillators & Synthesizers

A transmitter needs a stable frequency source. Oscillators create the signal; synthesizers generate many accurate frequencies from one or more references.

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind E7H while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. An oscillator needs loop gain and correct phase

Sustained oscillation occurs when the feedback loop has sufficient gain and a total phase shift that reinforces the signal at the desired frequency. Resonators or timing networks select which frequency meets the condition.

2. Crystal oscillators favor stability

Quartz resonators have very high Q, making crystal oscillators far more stable than simple LC oscillators. Temperature-compensated or oven-controlled designs improve stability further.

3. PLL and DDS are common synthesizer methods

A phase-locked loop compares a divided oscillator with a stable reference and corrects the oscillator frequency. Direct digital synthesis numerically generates a waveform from a clock and phase accumulator.

E7H checklist

  • Oscillation requires reinforcing feedback at the desired frequency.
  • Quartz crystals provide high-Q frequency stability.
  • A PLL locks an oscillator to a reference through phase comparison and feedback.
  • DDS derives precise output frequency numerically from a reference clock.
