Tests & Test Equipment

Test equipment becomes useful when you know what quantity it measures and how the instrument itself can affect the circuit being measured.

Practical takeaway

Test equipment becomes useful when you know what quantity it measures and how the instrument itself can affect the circuit being measured.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G4B while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. A multimeter is for basic electrical quantities

A digital multimeter measures voltage, current, and resistance, but the connection changes with the measurement. Voltage is measured across a point; current requires the meter in the current path; resistance is measured with power removed.

2. An oscilloscope shows voltage versus time

A scope can reveal waveform shape, amplitude, frequency, timing, and distortion. Probe bandwidth, capacitance, and ground connection matter, especially around RF.

3. RF instruments answer RF questions

A wattmeter measures forward or reflected RF power, while an antenna analyzer or VNA can characterize impedance and SWR. A frequency counter is useful only when its input level and frequency limits are respected.

G4B checklist

  • Know how a DMM is connected for voltage, current, and resistance.
  • Use an oscilloscope to view waveform shape and timing.
  • Use RF power/SWR instruments for transmission-line and antenna measurements.
  • Remember that probes and instrument limits can affect a measurement.
