G3B · General question group

MUF/LUF, Path Choice & Refraction

An HF path usually has a useful frequency window. Too high and the signal may pass through the ionosphere; too low and absorption may become too great.

Practical takeaway

An HF path usually has a useful frequency window. Too high and the signal may pass through the ionosphere; too low and absorption may become too great.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G3B while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. MUF is the upper useful edge

Maximum usable frequency is the highest frequency expected to support ionospheric communication between two points for the current path and conditions. Above it, the wave may not bend enough to return to Earth.

2. LUF is the lower useful edge

Lowest usable frequency is the lower practical limit where absorption and noise become too great for reliable communication. More power can sometimes help near the LUF, but it does not change the path geometry.

3. Choose the path as well as the band

Short path is the shorter great-circle route; long path is the opposite route. Time of day and ionization can make one far better than the other.

G3B checklist

  • MUF is the highest frequency expected to support the path.
  • LUF is the lower practical limit set largely by absorption and noise.
  • The useful HF range lies between LUF and MUF.
  • Short path and long path can have very different conditions.
